Mannitol, with the chemical formula C6H14O6, is a sugar alcohol and an isomer of sorbitol. It is easily soluble in water and is a white crystalline powder with a sweet taste similar to sucrose.

 

PRODUCT USAGE

Medical Applications

Mannitol is a good diuretic in medicine, which can reduce intracranial pressure, intraocular pressure, and treat kidney medicine, dehydration medicine, sugar substitute, and is also used as an excipient for tablets and a diluent for solids and liquids.

Mannitol injection (Injectio Mannitou) is a hyperosmotic antihypertensive drug. It is a commonly used drug for clinical rescue, especially for brain diseases. It has the characteristics of fast blood pressure reduction and accurate efficacy required by drugs for reducing intracranial pressure. It can also prevent and treat early acute renal insufficiency.

As an excipient for tablets, mannitol is non-hygroscopic, dries quickly, has good chemical stability, and has the characteristics of refreshing and good granulation. It is used in most tablets such as anticancer drugs, antibacterial drugs, antihistamines and vitamins. In addition, it is also used in chewable tablets such as hangover medicines and mouth fresheners.

Although mannitol can be absorbed by the human gastrointestinal tract, it does not accumulate in the body. After being absorbed, part of it is metabolized in the body, and the other part is excreted from the urine;

Mannitol absorbs heat when dissolved, has a sweet taste, and feels comfortable in the mouth, so it is more widely used in the manufacture of chewable tablets such as hangover medicine and mouth fresheners. Its granular form is specially used as an excipient for direct tablet compression.

Food field

In terms of food, this product has the lowest water absorption among sugars and sugar alcohols, and has a refreshing sweetness. It is used for anti-sticking of foods such as maltose, chewing gum, and rice cakes, and as anti-sticking powder for general cakes. Dibromomannitol can be obtained by hydrobromic acid reaction.

It can also be used as a low-calorie, low-sugar sweetener for foods for diabetic patients and bodybuilding foods.

Industrial production

Polymannitol-propylene oxide ether made by pressurizing with mannitol as the initiator is widely used in the plastics industry. Rigid polyurethane foam plastics based on polymannitol-propylene oxide have good oil resistance, thermal oxidation resistance and dimensional stability, and the heat resistance is as high as 180°C.

In the fine chemical industry, stearic acid mannitol ester made by esterification of stearic acid and mannitol has a wide range of uses: as a food emulsifier and dispersant, it can be widely used in cakes, candies, beverages, etc., and it is also used as an emulsifier and dispersant in coatings, textiles, daily chemicals and pharmaceutical industries.
