D-xylose is a five-carbon sugar obtained by hydrolysis of hemicellulose-rich plants such as sawdust, rice straw, and corn cobs. Its chemical formula is C5H10O5. Colorless to white crystals or white crystalline powder with a slight special smell and refreshing sweetness. The sweetness is about 40% of sucrose. , with a melting point of 114 degrees, has dextrorotatory and variable optical rotation, is easily soluble in hot ethanol and pyrimidine, and has a sweetness of 67% that of sucrose.
